Dear Residents of Peñitas,
Earthworks Enterprise, in partnership with the City of Peñitas, will soon begin construction
on the Tom Gill Road Flood Mitigation Improvements Project. This project is designed to
enhance drainage infrastructure and improve roadway conditions along Tom Gill Road.
The project will include the installation of drainage structures to efficiently capture
rainwater between Volcano Avenue and Marble Street. Additionally, Tom Gill Road will be
widened from its current two-lane configuration to a three-lane roadway, featuring a
designated 13-foot-wide center left-turn lane to improve traffic flow and safety.
Due to the existing road width, maintaining two-way traffic during construction will not be
feasible. To accommodate the work, a temporary detour route will be in place:
• Southbound traffic will be rerouted through Volcano Avenue, south on N. 11th
Street, east on Marble Street, and then back onto Tom Gill Road.
• Northbound traffic will continue on Tom Gill Road but will be limited to the
leftmost lane of the existing roadway.
Residents living on Nugget Street, Opal Street, Platinum Street, Quartz Street, Ruby
Street, Sapphire Street, Uranium Avenue, and Volcano Avenue who need to travel
southbound will need to first travel west toward 11th Street, cross Tom Gill Road (if coming
from the east side), and follow the designated detour.
To ensure a smooth transition and minimize disruptions, the City of Peñitas has notified
the La Joya ISD Transportation Department as well as emergency services, including
local police, fire departments, and ambulance services.
We appreciate your patience and cooperation during this construction period. These
improvements are essential to enhancing road safety, traffic efficiency, and flood
mitigation for our community. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not
hesitate to reach out to the City of Peñitas or Earthworks Enterprise.
Thank you for your support as we work to improve Tom Gill Road for the residents of
Peñitas.
